The alarming claim
A viral headline says Black wealth has sunk to a new low. But ‘wealth’ is not a single number, and the measure, time period, and population matter. Household wealth is generally assets minus debts, and economists distinguish a median family from the average of all families.
What the Federal Reserve recorded
In the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, median Black family wealth was estimated at about $44,890 in 2022 dollars, compared with about $285,010 for white families. This is a profound gap, but the same historical table shows Black median wealth in 2022 was higher than in 2019; the claim of a record dollar low is not supported by that series.
An unequal system can coexist with rising totals
A family’s balance sheet reflects housing, retirement accounts, ownership of businesses, debt, inheritance, and earnings. A dollar increase does not imply equality, and a narrowing or widening ratio can differ from a change in dollar wealth. Analysts must make clear which phenomenon they are describing.
The question
What would real progress look like: higher typical wealth, greater ownership, or a smaller ratio separating households across racial lines?
