An astonishing headline from a draft filing

Reuters reported on October 20, 2026 that Anthropic recorded more than $80 billion in net losses for the first half of the year, based on a Wall Street Journal account of a draft IPO prospectus. The comparison was approximately $13 billion for the year-earlier period.

Most of the figure was not ordinary operating cash burn

Of the reported total, about $72 billion reflected accounting charges associated with convertible notes and other financial instruments. Those changes in reported value can have dramatic effects on net income without representing cash spent on computers during the same period.

The real questions are still expensive

AI infrastructure, training, inference, hiring, and financing are costly. But judging business sustainability requires separating operating losses, cash flow, recurring revenue, and accounting revaluations. Anthropic did not immediately comment to Reuters on the reported numbers.

Apep Bar asks

Is a giant net-loss headline telling us the business is failing—or that private-company financing has made the accounting extraordinarily strange?
