A shooter that looks suspiciously familiar. A price that barely clears five dollars. And a whole lot of online chatter. Meet Hood Warfare 2, the independent PC game being compared to Call of Duty—whether its creators asked for that comparison or not.

Released October 8, 2026, by developer and publisher Trapstar Games, Hood Warfare 2 drops players into a fictional battle for control of Chicago. It has the rapid-fire multiplayer action, loadouts, weapon attachments, and competing teams that make the military-shooter comparisons easy to understand. But let’s clear up one mystery immediately: this is not a Call of Duty game, and there is no reported official connection to that franchise.

What’s hiding behind the $5 price tag?

The game’s regular U.S. Steam price is $5.99, with an introductory 10% discount bringing it to $5.39 through October 15. So the “$5 game” label is a rounded-off nickname, not quite the checkout total.

According to its official Steam listing, the sequel uses Unreal Engine 5 and introduces updated weapon animations, new locations, customizable sights and grips, and six game modes. Players can fight online or set up matches against bots. Maps include downtown Chicago, suburban neighborhoods, a shopping mall, and a location called The Trenches.

In other words, the game isn’t trying to win a realism contest. It’s serving up fast, chaotic shootouts with a wink.

The numbers are real. The “viral” label needs context.

Insider Gaming’s October 12 report described the game gaining attention on social media and cited a player-count peak of 4,491—a sharp contrast with the original game’s reported peak of 68. That’s a notable jump for a small sequel, but it isn’t proof that the title has become a blockbuster. Viral excitement and lasting success are two different levels to unlock.

Steam currently labels user feedback “Mostly Positive,” although its review totals and percentages change as more people play. Not everyone is cheering: the Insider Gaming report also highlighted complaints about spawn camping and whether the novelty stays entertaining after the first few matches.

There’s another detail worth noticing

Trapstar Games says Hood Warfare 2 is fictional entertainment and explicitly disclaims support for real-world gang violence. That matters because its street-gang setting and intentionally exaggerated presentation are part of what make the title attention-grabbing—and potentially divisive.

The bigger story may be less about whether a tiny shooter can overthrow a major franchise and more about how cheaply made—or simply inexpensive—games can suddenly attract an audience when clips, jokes, and curiosity collide online.

The Apep Bar question: Is Hood Warfare 2 the next unlikely indie success story, or just a five-dollar detour before players head back to their usual battlefields?
